DREŽNICA GOAT AND HER PEOPLE
LOGLINE
A critically endangered Drežnica goat symbolizes the potential loss of Slovenia’s biodiversity and rich cultural heritage. This film captures breathtaking footage of the goats in their Alpine habitat and follows the locals fighting to preserve their way of life and the agrarian model of sustainability.
SYNOPSIS
The Drežnica goat is critically endangered. Along with the goat, the only indigenous Slovenian breed that reigns on the steep slopes of Northern Primorska, the nation's biodiversity is at risk, as well as the ethnographic, cultural, and spiritual heritage of the local area. The extinction of the Drežnica goat would mark the end of generations-long harmony between humans and nature, the collaboration of communities, and the agrarian model that we now recognize as the foundation of sustainable development. The film showcases never-before-seen documentary footage of goats in their natural habitat on the inaccessible Alpine cliffs, along with the stories of locals who, using their own skills and the ancestral wisdom passed down through generations, strive to avert the inevitable.

The film originated from an initiative by Prof. Dr. Simon Horvat, a long-time researcher of the Drežnica goat. It was developed as a part of Javna agencija za znanstvenoraziskovalno in inovacijsko dejavnost republike Slovenije
ARIS projekt št. J4-1768. The project was also supported by the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum, and as with most of our films, funding was received through the Slovenian Film Center. Marko Kumer Murc, the director, invited DOP, Mitja Mlaka, to join the project. The contributions of the Film Factory and producer, Mojca Pernat, helped elevate the film.
